E. Merrill Root papers, 1917-1967.

Collection comprises correspondence, poetry, manuscripts, tearsheets, articles, and pamphlets associated with American Edward Merrill Root, a poet, teacher, and anti-communist activist. Correspondence comprises incoming and outgoing letters, including letters written by Root from France, 1917-1918. Major correspondents include William F. Buckley Jr., Kenneth Colegrove, Max Eastman, Frank Harris, Arthur T. O'Leary, and Robert Welch. Poetry includes tearsheets and published poetry from magazines and pamphlets. Collection includes several articles about Root, including reviews of his work; there is also a dismantled scrapbook of reviews. The collection includes business papers, John Birch Society and collected conservative materials, Earlham College memorabilia, a cassette of Root reading his poetry, and the 1955 film, Facts forum: UNESCO good or bad influence.

American poet and college professor E. Merrill Root (1895-1973) was a conservative and anti-communist activist who wrote articles and books on communist and Marxist propoganda in the American educational system. The son of a Congregational minister, Root was a devout Quaker and pacifist and went to France in World War I under the auspices of the American Friends Service Committee.
